Unique Ways to Explore Salt Lake City With Kids
Salt Lake City. The Beehive State. Land of industry and hard work! We have a soft spot for Salt Lake City because we have serviced over 300 families traveling there! Can you believe it?! So we decided to do some research and provide a list of unique and fun things to do in the Salt Lake City area for families with kiddos, toddlers, and babies!
Discovery center fun.
Scales and Tales is an awesome exhibit and discovery center full of reptiles and other unique animals. It is not your typical zoo! There are snakes, spiders, and lizards…oh my! You can choose to go to their showroom which is open to the public or you can schedule a special show experience. Make sure to follow them on Instagram @scalesandtailsutah for photos and updates of all their creatures.
Explore a giant crater or ice castles.
Just about an hour outside of Salt Lake City is the Homestead Resort, which is a perfect getaway for the entire family. The resort is perfect for relaxing or exploring as it offers kid-friendly indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs for a good soak; and the most iconic swimming option of the resort is the Homestead Crater. “The Crater is a geothermal spring, hidden within a 55-foot tall, beehive-shaped limestone rock located on the Homestead property.” The water is a comfortable 90-96 degrees (F) and the crater is the only warm water scuba diving destination in the US!
If you’re staying at Homestead in the winter, make sure to check out the Ice Castles and have lunch at Fanny’s. The kids will love how majestic (and cold!) the frozen castles are! Did we mention that the resort in general is super baby/kid friendly? Check out some of the guest stories and follow them on Instagram @homesteadresort_utah to see all the happy families that have traveled there!
Ride the trolley and take in the sights.
Let’s face it, kids can only walk so far and so much. So if your littles start to complain about walking Salt Lake City, then it’s time to hop on the trolley and explore the city in a replica street car. Your guide will narrate the tour and you’ll see all the historic landmarks! We think this is a good idea when baby is napping in the front pack or baby carrier too. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the tour
Professional sports fun.
Take your crew to a Real Salt Lake Utah Royals football (hint, hint…soccer) game. The Salt Lake City soccer team is part of the MLS league, so you’ll be watching super professional soccer. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon! Don’t forget to swing by the team store to pick up some team swag. It will be a nice way to remember your SLC trip
Get your grub on at a few SLC staples that the kids will love too.
Mr. Charlie’s Chicken does not look like your average chicken finger shop. The pictures will make your mouth water! This is a great place to order large platters from if you want to take it back to your Airbnb. Or hop on over to Ruth’s Diner, a Salt Lake City icon for 87 years! They have the standard diner menu and serve breakfast every day until 4PM. Even your picky eaters will find something to eat at Ruth’s! Be prepared to wait in line as it is VERY popular; but it’s definitely a must-eat destination. Oh! Make sure to check out their calendar/events for live music and other fun festivities.
Get wet and beat the summer heat.
If you’re heading to SLC this summer, you won’t want to miss Cowabunga Bay Water Park in Draper. It’s ranked one of the 30 best water parks in the US by USA Today. There’s a Kid’s Cove for the toddlers and little ones and VIP Cabanas for mom and dad. So…we’ll be there all summer.
Give your kid’s an old fashioned drive-in movie experience.
About 20 minutes south of Salt Lake City, you’ll find yourself at Redwood Drive In Theater. Who doesn’t love an outdoor movie in the summertime? And chances are, your kiddos haven’t experienced this as drive-in theaters are few and far between these days! So pack up your rental car, bring some blankets, and popcorn too! Make sure to take a look at their handy “how to” guide for the drive-in experience. There’s also a swap meet there year round!
Sweet treats for everyone.
Last on the list: dessert! You can’t visit the Salt Lake area without going to Last Course. Aptly named as it is an eatery completely dedicated to dessert! They have everything from cakes and ice cream, to Strawberry Nachos and dessert tacos. You and your kiddos will be thanking us later. Make sure to check them out on Instagram, @lastcourse so you can plan your order ahead of time!
If you want to pack light on your next trip to Salt Lake City, consider renting your baby and toddler gear instead of bringing it with you. We have awesome providers in the area who are ready to make your getaway less stressful!
