Types of Car Seats
The American Association of Pediatrics recommends following the guidelines outlined below for the different stages of a child’s growth.
Infants and babies should be in rear-facing car seats as long as possible or until the child is within 1 inch of the top of the seat. In fact, the AAP recommends that all infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car seats, as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat manufacturer.
Children must be at least 2 years old, or have reached the maximum height or weight capacity of the car seat to warrant a ride in a front-facing seat. Refer to owners manuals for more information or ask your QP which seat would be best for your situation!
Big kids get the booster seats! Don't rush to move your child to a booster seat before they are officially big enough. Children are typically ready for a booster seat when they are between 40 and 65 pounds or have outgrown the height and weight requirements for their previous car seat.
Clean, Safe & Insured Baby Equipment:
Quality Providers are required to complete extensive training on equipment safety before they begin renting baby gear. They are taught how to properly clean items to ensure every family is able to experience safe and spotless items. Unlike most baby gear rental companies, BabyQuip carries insurance covering your entire rental experience making us the safest choice for you and your little one.
Things to Consider When Renting a Car Seat
When traveling with babies, toddlers and/or children, attempt to rent a car seat or booster seat that is most similar to the one you already own. Keep the following things in mind to ensure you choose the safest and most appropriate car seat for your little one.
Be aware of how much space you have - If you are reserving a rental car at your destination location make sure there is enough room in the back seat to fit your car seat, or the one you plan to rent. A large base may not fit in the back seat of a small car.
You will need to install the car seat yourself - All Quality Providers are required to provide customers with a car seat manual that includes installation instructions, but are not allowed to install a safety seat for a customer. Basic instructions are also typically printed on the car seat itself as a reminder/guide. Please always refer to the user manual to make sure the car seat you are renting is properly secured and appropriately installed. You can find a certified technician at NHTSA should you choose to have someone double check your installation.
Make sure you choose the correct size seat - Choosing the correct car seat for baby’s height and age can get a bit confusing. Below we outline the three main types of safety seats and when they should be used. Please also refer to your state (or the state you are traveling to) for laws and guidelines. Safe Ride 4 Kids is a great place to search.

Car Seat Safety: Frequently Asked Questions
Are car seats that Quality Providers rent new?
All QPs are required to purchase car seats new or rent ones that have been purchased new for their own children that have not been dropped or involved in an automobile accident. All safety seats have an expiration date and are not allowed to be rented (and are discarded) after the date has passed.
Are car seats cleaned before and after they are rented?
Yes! We require that all QPs meticulously clean all of their baby equipment, including car seats. Babies' immune systems are still developing and we understand that you as parents or grandparents rightfully expect clean, sanitized products. Car seats are inspected and cleaned after every pickup and then inspected and lightly cleaned again before the next delivery. All cleaners used are organic or non-toxic.
Is one car seat safer than another?
All U.S. car seats are required to meet and pass crash tests under U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, so inexpensive safety seats actually meet the same standards as more expensive seats. One drawback to inexpensive car seats is comfort. A little extra money for the plush car seat could make or break your sanity if you plan to do a lot of driving. Most QPs have more than one option for car seats!
What are the car seat laws in the US?
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) recommends keeping your child in the car seat for as long as possible, as long as the child fits within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements. Please use the NHTSA car seat recommendations for children by age: Car Seat Recommendations for Children
