As the capital of New South Wales (also known as destination NSW), Sydney beckons visitors worldwide during the autumn season. From March 1 to May 31, visitors will get the best photo opportunities in front of autumn colors, deciduous trees, and colorful autumn leaves. 

Below are nine wonderful places to visit when you travel to Sydney during the autumn months. We have featured plenty of parks and gardens in addition to some downtown spots and wine country spots! You’ll find that many of these places are certainly kid-friendly too!

Families can hike through the Blue Mountains National Park, visit scenic lookouts, and explore the Jenolan Caves, and that’s not even half of it! Nearby is Mount Tomah, where the highest botanic garden in Australia is located. This garden, the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, sits 1,000 meters above sea level and features thousands of beautiful plants. You don’t want to miss

Wentworth Falls

If you already making plans to visit the Blue Mountains National Park during autumn in Sydney, then you can take the Wentworth Falls hiking track. You will get to look out over large valleys and reach the top of Wentworth Falls waterfall. This hike takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour and isn’t for everybody because of steep stairs and hidden cliff edges. But if you can make the hike, I can guarantee you will not have any regrets!

There are amazing photo opportunities everywhere you look, and families will enjoy visiting the Auburn Botanic Garden’s many features. To name a few, visitors should stop by the Fauna Reserve and bird aviary, the native and rainforest garden, the pool of reflection, and the sunken rose garden. Little ones will enjoy running around the garden playground!

Kids will love the various events that are held at the garden, like sunset spotlight tours. Inside the Royal Botanic Garden is The Calyx, home to shopping, food, events, and more. When you are about to wrap up your visit, stop by the Garden Shop for 100% raw and unheated honey collected straight from the garden’s beehives. There is plenty to do at The Royal Botanic Garden, that’s for sure! 

The Southern Highlands

The Southern Highlands is the place to go if you want to unwind in the countryside during autumn in Sydney. The Southern Highlands are known for their extensive wine region with over 60 wineries! If wine isn’t your thing, you can hike through the bushland and visit the historic Georgia village, Berrima, zipline, and more. Little ones will love the Great Westen Wildlife Corridor, where native animals roam in their natural habitats.

In addition, there are a few children’s playgrounds, including the amazing Ian Potter Children’s WILD PLAY Garden.

What are you waiting for if you have never been to Sydney in the autumn months? Well, maybe for the season to change—ha! If you plan to visit Sydney during autumn, keep in mind that March is the wettest month, averaging 5.13”. May is the least wet during the autumn season but still averages 3.91”. The point is not to forget your umbrella and raincoat! Even if it rains all day, you won’t regret visiting these breathtaking places in beautiful Sydney, Australia.
